Can You Really Do it Yourself?
Saturday, July 16th, 2011
Since the American economy imploded in 2008, Americans have become a little handier around the house. This new found self reliance is great when the fixes up jobs are relatively simple, but it can cause real problems for the more complex jobs.
One household chore that most people feel comfortable taking on is installing light switches. But can that basic set of electric skills transfer to bigger jobs like installing bathroom fans or outdoor heaters? Unless a homeowner is really confident with their electric skills, this is a job best left to a professional.
If they’re lucky, a bad installation can leave them with some blown out, but expensive, Panasonic bathroom fans. In the worst case scenario, an electrical fire burns down the entire house.
Homeowners who aren’t completely comfortable with their electrical skills, but still don’t want to pay an electrician, should look for safe alternatives. Instead of installing built in outdoor patio heaters, the novice electrician should consider freestanding units instead.
Smart handymen, and women, know that there’s a reason professional tradesmen make big bucks, it’s because they know what they’re doing and can install hardware safely and efficiently. So take a step back and make an honest evaluation of what jobs are in your skill range.
